The Chapman Consulting Group's 2nd Quarter HR Leader Session in Hong Kong

Hosted by: Prudential

The Chapman Consulting Group (ChapmanCG) co-hosted the 2nd Quarter Regional HR Leaders session at the offices of Prudential in Hong Kong on Monday 17th June. This session was part of the ChapmanCG’s Asia Series of HR Leaders Meetings and was one of a number of group sessions that were held in Hong Kong that week. The session was chaired by Ben Davies, a Managing Director with ChapmanCG and Oscar Fuchs, a Hong Kong based Managing Director with ChapmanCG. Paul Ferrari, a new Hong Kong based Director (focused on Greater China) with ChapmanCG was also present.

A broad mix of industries were represented in a vocal round table. There was plenty of best practice sharing and representatives from Australian Trade Commission, Arrow Electronics, Bank of New York Mellon, Bayer, BT, Cathay Pacific, CBRE, Citi, CITIC Capital, CLSA, Coach, Eastspring Investments, Eli Lilly, Fujitsu, Global Payments, HSBC, Hyatt, Kingfisher, Leo Burnett, Linklaters, Mars, Methanex, Prudential, RBS, Shangri-La, Stryker, Swiss Re, Tiffany, Time Medical, Western Union and Wells Fargo, to name a few.

Keynote topics for discussion were centered on talent challenges and on how HR can drive diversity. The group exchanged ideas and key takeaways included:

  • Integrating HRIS platforms to replace bespoke systems and keeping up to speed with technological innovations may be costly, but will increase greater efficiencies over the longer-term.
  • Employees at some MNCs can now bring their own devices to the work-place and firms are increasingly moving towards cloud technologies.
  • Communicating to employees via social media platforms and internal blogs is more likely to be effective when there is a clear message and strategy behind those social interactions.
  • Most MNCs do not provide regional management with training on working across diverse and contrasting cultures in Asia Pacific.
  • Driving diversity requires HR to understand diversity within the context of their own firm.
  • Talent is often over-worked but under-utilised.

Similar ChapmanCG APAC HR leader gatherings have taken place over the last three weeks in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Thailand. The next Hong Kong HR Regional leaders gathering will be held later in the year.
