The Chapman Consulting Group Continues to Build Profile in Hong Kong

Hosted by: Bank of America Merrill Lynch Jardine Matheson Tiffany

The Chapman Consulting Group recently had a busy week in Hong Kong with a series of networking events for senior HR Practitioners over the period of 27 to 29 October.

On Wednesday 27 October, we joined Organisation Solutions at the regional offices of Tiffany & Co. in Hong Kong for a two hour presentation on ‘Leadership Matters’. Regional Heads of Learning and Talent from 20 multinationals were in attendance, including representatives from companies such as Disney, Morgan Stanley, Agility, Prudential, ING and RBS. During the session, the roundtable group discussed the current definition of leadership, as well as the characteristics make a great leader, the different approaches to leadership styles, and how leaders impact company performance. The session formed part of the ‘Good Science, Great Practice’ series pioneered by Organisation Solutions, and aimed at helping senior HR Leaders connect current research with experience on people and organisation practices. The Chapman Consulting Group enjoys supporting this HR series.

On Thursday 28 October, The Chapman Consulting Group hosted a lunch discussion on Quarter Four Regional HR Talent Trends affecting the banking sector. The lunch was held at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong and we welcomed along 15 senior HR Leaders from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, HSBC, UBS, Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, DBS, Nomura and various other financial institutions. During the 90 minute lunch, HR Leaders reflected on HR talent issues at play in building and retaining their HR teams. Amongst the topics covered were the importance of having a regional HR business plan that glues together the mission and objectives of the APAC HR structure; rotating talent through HR specialisations and geographies to improve retention; selecting HR talent that fits different HR models; and also smarter strategies around hiring and retaining HR graduates. We were impressed with the openness of HR Leaders to share their thoughts with each other and felt that the lunch was an excellent vehicle for everyone in attendance to get a broader industry perspective of what’s going on in the HR space.

Friday 29 October saw us attending an early morning breakfast presentation at Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong for 18 Regional HR Heads and Regional Talent Heads. Dr Alison Eyring, CEO of Organisation Solutions, delivered an entertaining and interactive presentation on ‘The Importance of Evidence-Based HR’. HR Leaders joined from Noble Group, Avery Dennison, Freshfields, HSBC, Thomson Reuters and other Hong Kong-based regional multinationals. The presentation looked at the fact that every day, business and HR Leaders make decisions intended to improve organisation and individual performance. However, too often these decisions are based on myth and mis-information. To create true value for their business, HR Leaders must make, shape and execute decisions based on the best available evidence of what works. Participants walked away with a better understanding of evidence-based management and how to add value to their business by using this approach.
