The Chapman Consulting Group to Co-Host Nine HR Community Events in Japan in June

The Chapman Consulting Group is happy to announce that we will be expanding our series of Japan HR networking events in June of this year. With the generous support of nine separate organisations, we will be co-hosting 7 sessions for Japan HR Leaders, as well as separate events for Japan Talent Heads and Japan HR Business Partners. The events have been designed to bring together small diverse groups of HR practitioners so that ideas and best practices can be shared on a specific topic.

For the Japan HR leaders events, the topic of the next series of events will be HR’s role in business continuity following the disruption of ‘normal’ activity in the wake of the earthquake, tsunami, and on-going power supply issues in Japan. We will be discussing how HR can play a creative part in keeping motivation and productivity high, as well as continue being the conduit for important information sharing between Japan and the company’s other regional and corporate offices. These events will be co-hosted by such organisations as Barclays Capital, Henkel, Dow Chemical, Nomura Securities, Manulife, Siemens and Infosys Technologies.

In an experimental departure from our existing series of Japan events, our two new HR networking events will explore other key areas of focus for the HR profession in Japan. In our Japan Talent Leaders event, co-hosted by Bloomberg LLC, we will be exploring the extent to which talent management practices can be further embedded into the culture and fabric of multinational corporations in Japan. While Japan has come a long way since it’s traditional ‘job for life’ and ‘salary based on length of tenure’ culture, there still remain many challenges before true performance-based models can be successfully implemented. We will be discussing best practices in how ‘conventional’ international standards of talent management practices can be successfully translated into the Japanese context.

And in the second new event, Thomson Reuters will be co-hosting a meeting of senior Japan HR Business Partners to discuss the gap that needs to be crossed before a strong domestically-focussed HR Business Partner can truly step into the role of a Country HR Leader. It’s only in recent times, with the advent of more complex regional HR structures such as single-point Centres of Excellence, that ‘second-in-command’ HR practitioners in Japan have needed to interact on a regular basis with their counterparts in other countries. This has exposed Japanese HR Managers to some of the skills needed in taking up a leadership position that includes a large element of ‘managing up’ to the outside world, however we will be exploring the other skills and personality attributes that are needed to succeed at the top level of HR in Japan.

We are looking forward to co-hosting these events, and to sharing the information that gets shared in them in future press releases later this year.
